Donegal postman Michael Gallagher, has shared his forecast for the festive season - and it's good news for anyone hoping for a white Christmas.

Michael, who has been predicting the weather for decades by observing nature, said there is a "strong possibility of snow around Christmas".

He also predicts a "changeable winter" and "lots of cold weather on the way" in December.

"The foxes are coming down from the mountains and the robins are going into the houses - they are well aware that something is in the air.

"There is definitely a change on the way in December, it will be very interesting to see.

"There was lots of hay made this summer and the older people are saying it will all be used over the winter - nature looks after its own."

Michael, who retired from An Post four years ago after delivering mail in the Bluestack Mountains for 48 years, learned about traditional methods of predicting the weather from the older generation.

"I like to keep the old traditions alive," he added.
